Photonic crystal has unique and excellent optical properties and can be used in various fields. The basic concept, potential applications and progresses on photonic crystals are introduced. Optical properties of photonic crystals such as photonic bandgap, photonic localization is discussed. Based on the principle of nearfield optics and its experimental technology, their measurement & characterization by nearfield optics are discussed especially. 
