AIM:To explore the relationship between the sense of loneliness and mental health of college students with different sexes,majors and grades.METHODS:①Totally 320 sophomore and junior students from Henan University and North China University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power were investigated in November,2005 with the random cluster sampling method.A total of 320 questionnaires were sent out.In the process of data collection,28 surveys were eliminated because some participant response was not complete or true,so 292 complete surveys were obtained with an efficient rate of 91.3%.②The College Student Loneliness Structure Questionnaire and SCL-90 Symptom Self-Report Scale were used to measure and get data.Student Loneliness Structure Questionnaire consisted of 18 items and 4 dimensions:social loneliness,intimate loneliness,self-loneliness,and development loneliness,in which the 1-5 grading system was adopted(the higher the scores,the higher the frequencies of loneliness).The SCL-90 Scale was composed of 90 items and nine factors:somatization,obsession-compulsion,interpersonal sensitivity,depression,anxiety,hostility,phobic anxiety,paranoid ideation and psychoticism,in which the 1-5 grading system was adopted(the higher the scores,the severer the symptoms).③All participants' demographic variables were obtained,such as grade,sex,major and so on,and the comparison was performed.RESULTS:292 valid questionnaires were involved in the result analysis.①The basic data of the subjects:There were 125 males(42.8%),167 females(57.2%);133 persons majoring in art(45.5%)and 159 in science(54.5%);137 sophomores(46.9%)and 155 juniors(53.1%).②There were significant differences in the sense of self-loneliness between sexes(t=3.15,P < 0.01),and the female students were more serious than the male college students;there were significant differences in the sense of self-loneliness and overall loneliness among arts college students and science students(t=2.55,P < 0.05;t=2.41,P < 0.05),and the art students were more serious than the science college students;but no significant difference was found in the social loneliness,intimate loneliness,self-loneliness,and development loneliness among the sophomore and junior.③The social loneliness and development loneliness were correlated significantly with mental health(r=0.207-0.393;r=0.246-0.384;P < 0.01),which had strong positively prediction power on nine factors of SCL-90 Symptom Self-Report Scale.CONCLUSION:Those students with higher-level loneliness have lower levels mental health.College should strengthen the education and mental regulation on loneliness.
