A model for quantitative reconstruction of climatic change recorded in peat archives,based on plant physiology,isotope dendroclimatology and palynology,is presented for the first time.The model can be expressed as follows: δ 13 C sedge =δ 13 C atm - a-(b-a )(1-1/ g 1 h )(1) (δ 18 O SSC +1 000)/(δ 18 O MW +1 000)=α eq α kα B- h (α eq α k-1)α B(2) t =(δ 18 O MW -δ 18 O MMW )/ a + t 0(3) C 3%= f(t,P,h) (4) Equ.(1) defines the relationship between δ 13 C values of sedge cellulose and relative humidity ( h or H ). Equ.(2) represents the relation of δ 18 O values ( δ 18 O SSC )of leaf cellulose of single species of plant in peat to those of meteoric water (δ 18 O MW ) uptaken by plants ,and h .From Equ.(3) We can calculate paleotemperature using δ 18 O MW temperature coefficient around “ α ” per mill per degree celcius.δ 18 O MMW and t 0 are oxygen isotopic composition of modern meteoric water and temperature in the study area respectively. Precipitation amount is obtained from equ.(4),showing that abundance of C 3 (or C 4) plants (C 3%)in natural ecosystems is predominantly controlled by three main climatic factors(temperature,precipitation and relative humidity).Paleo-C 3% values can be calculated by palynological methods. For practical use,we get h ,δ 18 O MW , t ,and P values in order according to equ (1) to (4).This model has been applied to peat archive in northeast China.The result is in agreement with that of palynological method.At present,the model is being tested in terms of modern plants.
