A general survey of medicinal plants in our country and search of the traditional Chinese and folk medicine for the prevention and treatment of commonly occuring diseases has been carried out in our institute during the past 21 years. This paper presents some aspects of our work on medicinal plants.l.In our studies on drugs affecting the CNS, we have identified scopolamine as the active principle of the traditional Chinese anesthetic. Securinine, which is an alkaloid isolated from Securinega suf fruticosa Rehd, Ganoderma, Gastrodia elata Bl, Schizandra chinensis Baill, Acorns gramineus Soland, Batrytis bassiana Bals, have been shown to be depressaents of the CNS.In addition, we have isolated two new alkaloids, anisodamine and anisodine from Scopolia tangutica Maxim. Both alkaloids have spasmolytic activity on the smooth muscle, practically the same as atropine. Anisodine is weaker than scopolamine and close to atropine in its effect on the CNS, while anisodamine is much weaker, about 1/6 to 1/20 of that of atropine.2.For anticancer agents, we have isolated from Cephylotaxus hainanensis 14 alkaloids, of which harringtonine was shown to have anticancer activity in rodent tumors. Clinical trials of harringtonine on 74 leukemia patients showed that 64 responded favorably, of whom 24 achieved complete remission. Since the content of harringtonine is very low, partial and total synthesis of harringtonine were accomplished. Indirubin was found to be useful for the treatment of chronic myelocytic leukemia patients. The total synthesis and some investigations on the pharmacological action of this drug were carried out.3.Our work on the drugs for the cardiovascular system involves researches on hypotensive agents, cardiotonics and drugs for the treatment of coronary heart diseases. For example, total isoflavones isolated from Pueraria lobata Li. were found to be only mildly hypotensive. However, intravenous injection of this drug to anesthetized dogs increased cerebral as well as coronary blood flow. The oxygen consumption of the myocardium and the production of lactic acid decreased, while the blood oxygen supply increased. Now, Pueraria and its isoflavones are used for the relief of symptoms of hypertensive disease, migraine, sudden deafness and angina pectoris.4.In an attempt to search for medicaments for the treatment of chronic bronchitis, we have studied three of the Rhododendrons:R. dauricum L., R.micranthum and R,anthopogonoides. A total of 27 constituents were isolated.The expectorant constituents are farrerol, demethyl farrerol, astragalin, etc. The antitussive constituents are hyperin, isohyperin, germacron benzylacetone. Scopoletin was found to be asthmolytic.5.For contraceptives, we found that gossypol possessed antifertility action on male rats. On administration of this drug, spermatids were damaged first. With the increase in dosage and duration of treatment, the spermatocytes were also damaged. In clinical trial, more than ten thousand subjects have been treated with gossypol. The efficacy is 99%. Side effects are mild and of relatively low incidence.

A rapid, reproducible and micro-quantitative method for the evaluation of the IgG contents in whole blood samples was reported. Each 20μl whole bloodsamples were collected from ear lobes by a pipette used in the Sahli hemometer and mixed with 0.73ml of saline. Thereafter, the formalinization and electroimmunoassay was performed as described eleswere. A single rocket peak of each sample was obtained after electrophoresis and staining. The IgG contents in whole blood samples of 18 healthy young adults and of 16 patients with chronic bronchitis were thus determined. A comparison was also made between the IgG content in 2 ml whole blood with the IgG content of 1ml of serum from each individual respectively. The results obtained showed no statistical significance.

报告了一种快速、微量、可重复的全血IgG定量法。用血色素吸管采耳垂血20微升,用生理盐水适当稀释后,按前文所述方法进行醛化和火箭免疫电泳,结果每一样品形成单一的火箭蜂。测定了十八名健康青壮年耳垂血和十六例慢性气管炎病人静脉血,并将同一个体的2毫升全血和1毫升血清的IgG含量作了比较,结果差别无统计学意义。根据正常人全血中血浆约占55%的体积,提出公式D_s=2D_b(1—5%),借以将每2毫升全血的IgG含量换算成1毫升血清IgG含量的近似值。同一份血标本分别用不同稀释液稀释,保存于4℃,并在两周内反复作八次电泳,测它们的IgG含量。变异系数分别为7.11%和5.47%。应用此法,IgG的定量只需几滴血,且很适合于对婴儿、儿童血中Ig水平的测定,也适合于对同一个体血中Ig动态变化的研究。

猫眼草(Euphorbia Lunulata Bge.)是民间治疗慢性气管炎的一种草药.为阐明其有效成分,提高疗效,对猫眼草进行了化学成分的研究.利用硼砂-乙酸乙酯,聚酰胺柱层析等方法,分离到六种结晶(Ⅰ~Ⅵ).经红外光谱、紫外光谱、质谱与核磁共振谱等分析及物理化学常数的测定,鉴定出其中五种结晶(Ⅰ~Ⅴ)分别为3,5,7,4′-四羟基黄酮(山萘酚),3,5,7,3′,4′-五羟基黄酮(槲皮素),山萘酚-3-单-L-鼠李糖甙,槲皮素-3-单-L-鼠李糖甙,与6,7-双羟基香豆精.Ⅵ是新化合物,其结晶经测定证明亦属香豆精类,命名为猫眼草素(Maoyancaosu).
