With the development of the IT technologies, the society is tied up with the computer software more and more closely. Thus, people have an urging wish to get the certain quality and correctness assurance in the application of the computer software. In reply to this earnest requirement, two important fields of computer science, software testing and program understanding, appeared several years ago and considerable progress has been made in these two fields since then. Program flow graph has been one of the most fundamental and most important means in the study of software testing and program understanding from the beginning until now. Traditionally, program flow graph shows us the detailed description of the logic of the program control flow. Furthermore, cooperated with other relevant analysis technologies of the software testing and program understanding, such as program slicing, software metrics, dynamic testing technology, program flow graph can provide more precise and practical analysis results of the program. In this paper, we propose an improved program flow graph -- Hierarchical Flow Graph (HFG), which is a whole hierarchical and graphical description of the program control flow. Instead of the traditional program partition mechanism practically based on two layers of node and segment, Hierarchical Flow Graph presents the new program partition mechanism, which divides the program into three layers: block, node and segment respectively, and then proposes the concept of three-dimensional program space. Also, Hierarchical Flow Graph can provide the program control flow on the basis of both static and dynimic analysis. Relying on the block pattern's capability of encapsulation, Hierarchical Flow Graph shows us the better property on structuralism, reusablility and expansibility. Moreover, Hierarchical Flow Graph adopts the flexible mechanism of program visual reduction and expansion, which presents the multilayered program framework and gives different users better aid to the work of program understanding and software testing.
