This paper reviews the physical, chemical and biochemical properties of coenzyme F_(420) which is one of coenzymes unique to mathanogenic bacteria and its applicatin as a parameter in anaerobic processes, as well as some measurement procedures for pure F_(420) and for F_(420) in anaerobic sludge or digestion mixed liquor. The authors consiber that it may be a reasonable concept to use the concentration of F_(420) i n anaerobic waste treatment plant for estimating the amount of mathanogenic bacteria or...

This paper reviews the physical, chemical and biochemical properties of coenzyme F_(420) which is one of coenzymes unique to mathanogenic bacteria and its applicatin as a parameter in anaerobic processes, as well as some measurement procedures for pure F_(420) and for F_(420) in anaerobic sludge or digestion mixed liquor. The authors consiber that it may be a reasonable concept to use the concentration of F_(420) i n anaerobic waste treatment plant for estimating the amount of mathanogenic bacteria or the mathanogenic potential activity. A new method for measuring coenzyme F_(420) in sludge or mixed liquor with a spectrophotometer without using pure F_(420) as standard was suggested by the authors. Interferences hampering the spectrophotometric measurement can be eliminated by pretreatment, and the concentration of F_(420) is calculated according to the absorbancy of the samples at 420nm as well as the molar extinction coefficient at pH 13.50.
