The two processes have occurred alter-nately in different times and places. In the Cenozoic, especially in the Paleogene,intense extension characterized the tectonic regime of the region. Two large riftbasin systems formed in the Bohai Gulf-Central Plains and Yellow Sea-northernJiangsu regions, but the regions between the systems were intensely compressed,forming a series of nappe structures. Correspondingly, in the Jurassic to Early Cre-taceous, the Bohai Gulf-Central Plains and Yellow Sea-northern Jiangsu regionswere extensional, and the first-generation extensional basins formed; whereas theregions between the two regions were compressional in the Jurasaic and extensionalin the Cretaceous. In the Late Cretaceous, the two regions were compressed, whereasextensional tectonio activity culminated in the regions between the two regions,forming the Tancheng-Lujiang rift system. The extensional and compressional processes of the crust in North China arerelated to diapirism and expansion of the mantle. The creep, updoming and diapir-ism of the upper mantle resulted in great extension of the crust and formation ofthe rift system. Both sides of the rift system were compressed because of lateralextension, and repeated thrusting and superimposition of strata consumed the amo-unt of extension in the rift system, thus keeping the general balance of the conti-nental crust. This is the genetic relation of extension and compression to rift andnappe structures.
