The purpose of this article is to analyse the convergence of infinite series in the Burke-Schumann diffusion flame equation and present the fastconverging condition of series and the approximate analytical solution for calculating the flame shape and height. Applying the converging condition of series, the error of series calculation is less than 0.51%. On the basis of theoretical analysis, the shape and height of the methane-oxygen diffusion flame and the concentration field within and without such a flame are calculated. The approximate analytical solution is compared with the Burke-Schumann exact solution with the result that the flame shape is in good agreement, the error of flame height is zero and the maximum relative error of flame boundary is 0.1613%。The variation of Y_(CH_4) and Yo_2 concentration field agrees very well with the experimental result obtained by Hottel and Hawthorne (4). It is concluded that the result of approximate analytical calculation approaches quite well to that of exact calculation, thus justifying the converging condition of series and showing that the approximate analytical solution presented is reliable.

Methanol motor fuels offer potential air quality and strategic resource advantages over gasoline and diesel. The low visibility of methanol flames poses a fire safety problem related to detection and suppression. A suitable test method and luminosity data are needed to assess the visibility of fuel fires. Methanol motor fuels offer potential air quality and strategic resource advantages over gasoline and diesel. The low visibility of methanol flames poses a fire safety problem related to detection and suppression. A suitable test method and luminosity data are needed to assess the visibility of fuel fires. A laboratory, pool burning experiment (100mm diameter) provided flames for luminosity assessment. Twelve fuels, n-heptane, toluene, i-octane, gasoline, diesel, methanol, and blends of methanol with the hydrocarbons were investigated. Photographs provided a qualitative record of flame appearance and visibility. Quantitative characterization included flame height, burning rate, an flame luminosity.
