Oil field development, which was simply "drilling plus production"with the well as the unit of production in the initial stage, has now evolved into one with the reservoir as the unit. Reservoir study and development of oil field based on reservoir characteristics have greatly enhanced the growth of oil field development geology. In the context of oil field development, reservoir study includes the following as its main subjects:(1) reservoir distribution-study of its discontinuity;(2) interconnected porous units-study of macroscopic heterogeneity;(3) fluid distributionstudy of distribution of oil, gas and water in interconnected porous units;(4) pore distribution-study of microscopic heterogeneity in the reservoir;(5) study of reservoir energy;and(6)study of reservoir variability during the process of its exploitation. Knowledge of the reservoir as a whole is essential to the planning of its development, taking into consideration of all aspects areally and vertically as well as its development by stages. Method of development appropriate to its characteristics is to be selected. Artificial displacement methods shall take into consideration the choice of displacement agents, displacement direction and displacement mode.

This process involves using a photo-imaging technique followed by chemical etching two-dimentional network pattern designed arbitrarily in glass surfaces. Our experimental studies show that such models are uscful for investigating microvisually the damages of the trapping and subsequent mobilization of residual oil, particle migration and bridge plug to reservoir and the mechanism of water shut offduring secondary and tertiary recovery processes.
