The melting point of the system decreases with the lowering of the NaF/AlF_3 mole ratio. There is a wide range of much lower temperatures, say less than 800℃.Some physical and electrochemical properties of the above mentioned system were studied at a temperature of 30℃ above its melting temperature. It was found that the vaporization loss of the molten electrolyte, the metal loss, density and electric conductivity of the molten electrolyte are all decreased with the lowering of the mole ratio. A layer of solid electrolyte was observed on the cathode carbon, when the temperature was excessively lowered. The carbon consumption is an interesting problem. When the mole ratio was in the range of 1.5-1.7, the carbon consumption is approaching to the theoretical value of 0.112 g/ampere-hour. The dissolution rate of alumina in the electrolyte decreases with the lowering of the mole ratio. However when the alumina was calcined at some lower temperatures, the rate of dissolution would increase rapidly. The current efficiency was measured in a 100 A bench scale electrolysis cell. When the temperature was in the range of 800-900℃, the current efficiency would be 85-95%. The high current efficiency is a great advantage of the low temperature electrolysis. In conclusion, the possibility of Iow temperature electrolysis is positively confirmed, and its shortcomings may be compensated with some remedial measures.
