This paper presents a simple and practical piezo-electric shank type three component dynamometer. It is composed of a piezoelectric quartz three component transducer fitted in the oval opening of a tool shank. It possesses, besides all the advantages of piezo-electric dynamometer such as high rigidity. high sensitivity. high fundamental natural frequency, good linearity, wide frequeney response and small cross sen sitivity, good dynamic characteristies and ease of measurement ete., also the features of simplicity in construction and lightness in weight. It is just like a lathe tool that can be clamped easily in the lathe and does the cutting, while at the same time the three components of the cutting force in steady as well as dynamic state can be measured in line by sending the charge signals through amplifiers and compensator, then registered with ordinary recording and indicating devices. Preliminary tests have shown that the results of measurement with the piezoelectric dynamomen- ter are the resultant of the elastic force and the inertia force ,therefore its error of measurement is much smaller than "displacement", type. The dynamomenter pressented in this paper has been calibrated in accord- ance with the recommendations proposed by MTDR. From the above tests on the behaviour of the dynamomenter, conelusion can be drawn that it can be used conveniently and reliably for cutting experiments and production and adaptive control system. The paper gives a comprehensive description of the essential points in the structural design and the dynamic analysis of shank type dynamomenter, the three component voltage compensator, the methods of calibration and the results of actual cutting tests. Two control loops are used in the proposed control scheme. In the outer control loop, a proportional integral voltage controller is used to regulate the CD-link voltage. A phase lock loop circuit is adopted to generate a sinusoidal waveform in phase with main voltage to achieve power factor correction. In the inner control loop, a carrier-based current controller is used to track the line current command. To compensate the neutral point voltage due to the load variation, a neutral point voltage compensator is used in the control scheme. Three voltage levels are generated on the AC terminal of the adopted rectifier. Computer simulations and experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control algorithm.
