Neo-tectonic movements in the northern section of the Yuanmou fault zone, Yunnan Prov. are very well reflected by the modification of landforms and the deformation of the early Pleistocene lacustrine strata.1. A narrow, deep trough-basin (the Yuanmou Basin) formed on the western side of the major Yuanmou fault was at first filled with Q1 lacustrine deposits of more than 400m thick, and then uplifted into a westward tilting high lake terrace. Subsequently 5 lower and lower river terraces appeared one after another only along the eastern margin of the trough-basin. The Longchuanjiang River, which has carved out the terraces, now runs along the western margin of the basin.2. Jurassic sandstones and shales were thrust westward on Q1 lacustrine deposits, which was affected by a series of young folds and faults. These folds and faults trend with a sharp angle toward the major Yuanmou fault and constitute some Quaternary tectonic structures of "A" pattern.3. A series of cross tectonic structures such as downwarp-faulted basins with an arched uplift between them is found in the trough-basin.All the features above mentioned suggest that the northern section of the Yuanmou fault zone forming the middle part of the Sichuan-Yunnan N-S tectonoseismic belt, has been affected not only by vertical, but also horizontal (either sinistral or dextral) multi-cyclic movements.Nevertheless, from the seismo-geological analysis we consider that the risk of a destructive earthquake here would not be so serious as that in the northern and southern terminal areas of the Sichuan-Yunnan N-S tectonoseismic belt.

The Quaternary tectonic stress states over the mentioned area and its relations to earthquakes are studied by combining the methods of geology, geomorphology. seismology and repeated levelling. Under the action of NEE-SWW trending horizontal principal compressional stress during the Quaternary period, the NW trending structure of this area was intensively upwarded and the EW trending faults suffered a tension-shear displacement leading to release the energy and to cause a series of smaller earthquakes,...

The Quaternary tectonic stress states over the mentioned area and its relations to earthquakes are studied by combining the methods of geology, geomorphology. seismology and repeated levelling. Under the action of NEE-SWW trending horizontal principal compressional stress during the Quaternary period, the NW trending structure of this area was intensively upwarded and the EW trending faults suffered a tension-shear displacement leading to release the energy and to cause a series of smaller earthquakes, while the NS trending faults were characteristics of compression-shear displacement leading to release less energy and to cause scarcely minor earthquakes. At the intersection of the two faults mentioned above where the differential tectonic movement reached the maximum, has occurred an earthquake of 63/4 magnitude.

本文用地质、地貌、地震等综合方法研究第四纪构造应力状态。本区第四纪主压应力为北东东—南西西方向。在这种应力作用下,区内南北向断裂呈压扭方式活动,东西向断裂以张扭方式活动,北西向构造强烈隆起。现今小震活动多沿东西向断裂分布。

The Tonghai-Shiping area is located in South Yunnan proyince, Many large historical earthquakes occurred in the area. It is important to study seismotectonies here.In this paper, the method of geomorphological analyses, the surface vertical tectonic deformation since pleistocene in the area is obtaine, and right iateral displacement, 5KM and average movement velocity 5mm/yr are (calculated trom the vertical deformation by elastic dislocation theory. The results show that present and quaternary tectonic stress fields are same, their principle compression axes are NNW-SSE direction.The average interval of earthquakes as large as magnitude 7along the Qujiang fault is about 400 years. The data of earthquakes in this area show that there had been a gap of the large earthquake along the fault during 400 years before the large Tonghai earthquake.

本文采用地貌分析法确定了云南省通海—石屏地区第四纪中的地表垂直构造形变。应用这个形变资料,根据弹性位错理论求得区内几条活动断层的错距,其中曲江断裂的右旋水平错距为5公里。指出本区在第四纪中主要受北北西—南东东方向的压应力作用。根据地震裂缝、三边测量、定点基线测量和震源机制资料,求得本区现代构造应力场。作者发现它与第四纪构造应力场是相似的。由曲江断裂的平均5—7毫米/年的水平运动速度去估计,通海7.7级地震平均复发周期为300—400年。作者还指出通海地震前400年内,地震活动形成空区。并利用围空地震资料,求得空区内地震震级M与围空地震的断层总面积S之间存在经验关系, M=1gs-3.8
