In the upper 37cm, the removal efficiency is very high. The test showed that when the media height is 37cm, the removal efficiency for SS,COD,BOD 5,NH 3 N and T N is 70%,82 5%,66 95%,53 6% and 50 2% respectively under the hydrolic rate of 0 53m/h.

The full-scale experiment was carried out on the use of variable rate biofilter with enzymatic medium for treatment of municipal wastewater, and study was made on the effect of hydraulic retention time ( HRT ) and temperature on the performance. The results showed that at normal temperature, when the media height is 1.5 m and 2.0 m with HRT > 3.5 h and 4.9 h, and the filter HRT > 9.7 h, the filter can efficiently remove organic and suspended matters in water.
