Twenty-five adult male rats(5 rats in eachgroup) were used. After a single irradiation(2450 megacycle, at 40. 5±℃, 15 min), therats in each group were decapitated atdifferent intervals (1, 7, 14 and 70 days). Under the light microscope, we meas-ured in each group one hundred FSH-andLH-cells with Paget's staining sections.When the average cell diameter and thenucleus diameter and the ratio of cytoplasmto nucleus were compared with the controls,there were no significant statistical differ-ences....

Under the electron microscope when theaverage granule diameter of FSH- and LH-cells was compared with the controls therewas no significant statistical difference. Bymeans of taking count of granules of boththe cells within 150 und micro squaresrespectively, the maximum mean of theunit square granules was in the FSH-cellsof 1 and 14 days (q value 4. 13,0. 05>P>0. 01). The organelles of gonadotroph cells were more strikingly affected on the RER andmitochondria only. The majority of mito-chondria of the FSH-cells were swollen, andits cristae were broken and the spaces ofcristae were swollen, too; but there were nobroken cristae in the LH-cells. the RER ofthe FSH-cells was more dilated than that ofthe LH-cells, and contained more densecatkiny contents (except 70 days andLH-cells).

The morPhometric changes in the intracellular organelles of adenohypophy-seal secretory cells were investigated in wistar male rats of various ages, young 1-month-old, adult 12-month-old and aged 31-month-old. It was found that the cytoplasm volume density ( Vv ) increased with aging Process in ACTH cells, but decreased in PRL cells. The nucleus Vv increased with aging in LH/FSH cells and TSH cells, but the nucleolus Vv decreased in them. The mitochondrion Vv increased with age in GH, PRL and ACTH cells , with associated increase of area numerical density ( NA ) of mitochondria in GH and ACTH cells. LiPofuscin developed with aging in all of the 5 secretory cells, and the increases were statistically significant, except for that in TSH cells. The relationships of these morphological changes and certain functional decline of the endocrine system in aging are discussed.

It was found that certain changes occurred with aging in all of the adenohypoPhyseal cells. The Vv and Sv of RER decreased with age in ACTH,LH/FSH and TSH cells, and so did the Vv and Sv of Golgi complex in LH/FSH cells and the Sv of Golgic complex in ACTH cells. In GH cells, the Vv and Nv in secretory granules increased with age; while in PRL cells, the Vv and Nv increased with age in mature granules but decreased in immature granules. The Vv of mature granules in TSH cells increased with age and the Nv o f immature granules decreased with age both in TSH and LH/FSH cells .
