The increasing contents of fresh weight and dry matter in water melon vines show slow—fast—slow rhythm with the plant weight presenting a “s” shape curve during the growing phase. As for the absolute increase,the highest is detected in fruiting stage.Next to it is found in vine-sprouting,The third happens in seedling.And the least is in germinating stage.Regarding relative contents of increase,very little can be found in seedling stage, while from the vine-sprouting to the early fruiting stage,it incr- eases gradually with the increase of leaf weight as a center,but the greatest occurs in middle—and—late fruitiug stage with the incense of fruit weight as a center.The daily average growth rises gradually as the growing period proceeds. Before fruit setting,the leaf area increases more slowly,the leaf area index will become smaller and finally reaches the maxi- mum in its middle fruiting stage The ratio T/R increases by de- grees during the growing period. The growth of watermelon fruits is based on the assimilated material from leaves,the area,therefore,influences the ovary and fruit size directly. The yield of watermelon depends mainly on both biological output and economical coefficient In the case of no overgrowth, a direct relation exists between biological output and economical yield,the latter of which is changed accordingly with the economi cal coefficient.

10 African watermelon (Citrullus lanatus L.) accessions (abbreviation: AW)were firstly introduced from Botzwana, Africa, to China in 1984. Their morphological, biological and agronomic characters, and disease resistance have been studied for three years. Albumin components and iso-esterase of AW seeds were assayed by using electrophoresis, and the contents of crude protein and fat were tested as well. The AW accession are obviously defferent from those of commercial watermelon cultivars(abbreviation:CW)in many characters, and a great diversity was found among these AW accessions, inoculation with 5×10 spores/ml of Fusarium wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. niveum)at seedling stage in field testing indicated that the AW accessions were highly resistant to Fusarium wilt and other kinds of diseases. The AW have a great yield potential. The fruits of AW have an amazing long storage life. Although the albumin components of AW and CW were quite similar, the iso-esterase of dry seeds was obviously different. The crubeprotein content and crude fat content as well as the oleic acid (C_(18)~1)and linoleic acid (C_(18)~2)are very rich, thus it is really a kind of very valuable plant oil material with high quality. In view of above rare characters, the newly introduced AW accessions can be wdiely used for the following purposes:a )stock food; b) resources for rifining plant oil and protein; c)raw materials for processing candied and canned watermelon fruit; and d)resistance stock for grafting of watermelon. And also, the AW accessions can be used as a very useful germplasm resource in watermelon breeding, especially for disease resistance, high yielding and long storage life.

1984年由非洲博茨瓦纳(Botswana)引入我国从未有的珍贵西瓜(Citrullus lanatus L.)种质材料10个。对其形态学、生物学特性、抗病性及经济性状进行了三年研究。用凝胶电泳法对种子酯酶(Est)同工酶及清蛋白组分进行了电泳分析,并对种子的总蛋白、总脂肪以及高级脂肪酸成分作了测定。研究表明:非洲西瓜在上述诸方面与普通栽培西瓜有明显的差异,两性花的广泛存在增强了结实能力和丰产性;高度的抗病性、耐贮性以及种子的优质脂肪成分和丰富的脂肪及蛋白质含量,使非洲西瓜可以兼作提取高级食用油及蛋白质的原料植物;果肉及果皮可用作饲料,加工罐头及果脯;由于它具有高度抗病性,所以可作为抗病砧木或作抗病育种的珍贵种质资源。

The results of the experiment show that on the soluble solid percentage of watermelon fruits, the common combining ability and special combining ability of watermelon self-bred line B_2 and B_4 are much higher than those of others in the experiment; B_2 and B_4 are considered as much more respectable breeding parent materials in the increasing watermelon sweetness breeding. Among the 15 hybrid combinations of watermelon varieties, the F_1 special combining ability of theB_2×B_6 and B_3×B_4...

The results of the experiment show that on the soluble solid percentage of watermelon fruits, the common combining ability and special combining ability of watermelon self-bred line B_2 and B_4 are much higher than those of others in the experiment; B_2 and B_4 are considered as much more respectable breeding parent materials in the increasing watermelon sweetness breeding. Among the 15 hybrid combinations of watermelon varieties, the F_1 special combining ability of theB_2×B_6 and B_3×B_4 combinations for the sweetness is highest and these two combinations are much more respectable for the sweetness increasing of the watermelon.

试验结果表明:西瓜果实可溶性固形物含量,一般配合力和特殊配合力均较高的B_2(SO4自交系)、B_4(石红2号自交系)是提高西瓜甜度育种较为理想的亲本。在十五个杂交组合中,B_2(SO4自交系)×B_6(兴城红自交系)F_1,B_3(富研自交系)×B_4(石红2号自交系)F_1特殊配合力最高,是提高果实甜度较为理想的杂交组合。
