The interfacial reaction of liquid stirred cast SiC P and SiO 2 (P) reinforced Al 4wt%Mg matrix composites was studied by means of analytical transmission electronic microscope. The results show that the fine MgO particles are formed on the surface of as received SiC particle and oxidized one. The quartz particles reacted with magnesium in matrix to form MgAl 2O 4. And the reaction mechanisms are explained respectively with the diffusion theory.

The interfacial reaction characteristics of Al Mg matrix composites reinforced with oxidized SiC particles were studied by FE SEM and TEM. The oxidation of SiC particles can prevent the attack from aluminum molten, but the aluminum alloy as matrix for composite are usually composed of element magnisum which is liable to react with the oxidized layer of SiC particles and form nanoparticle MgO or MgAl 2O 4 which is dependent on the content of Mg in the matrix.
