In water-acetone medium and at a hydrochloric acid concentration of 0.05 N, antimony (Ⅲ) reacts with 5-Br-PADAP to form a blue-violet complex. The absorption maximum and molar absorptivity of the complex have been determined and are found to be 610 nm and 5.1±104 1. mole-1 .cm-1, respectively. The color of the complex is stable...

A new spcctrophotometric method for determinating trivalcnt antimony with 2- ( 5-Bromo-2-pyridy1azo )-5-dicthylaminophenol ( abbreviated as 5-Br-PADAP ) is developed. In water-acetone medium and at a hydrochloric acid concentration of 0.05 N, antimony (Ⅲ) reacts with 5-Br-PADAP to form a blue-violet complex. The absorption maximum and molar absorptivity of the complex have been determined and are found to be 610 nm and 5.1±104 1. mole-1 .cm-1, respectively. The color of the complex is stable for 6 hours. Beer's law is obeyed in the concentration range of 0-1.2 p.p.m.Sb( Ⅲ ) . Among 25 foreign ions tested, only Fe( Ⅲ ), Cu( Ⅱ ), Co( Ⅱ ), Sn(IV)and Cr ( Ⅲ ) interfere but the interferences of 200 micrograms of Fe ( Ⅲ ) and Cu (Ⅱ ) can be eliminated individually by addition of thiourea and potassium iodide as masking agents.
