Stimulated by the recent development in the research area of second language vocabulary acquisition both in China and abroad, the author, by means of a questionnaire, conducted a survey of learner beliefs about vocabulary learning and strategy use by 203 non-English major freshmen in Tsinghua University. Based on the results, the author made some pedagogical suggestions on both the teaching of vocabulary knowledge and instruction in learning strategies.

This paper makes a survey and discussion on the English learning situations of freshmen by means of the descriptive statistics and qualitative analysis of a study of the 118 non-English major freshmen who are selected at random from Nanjing University of Science and Technology. The major findings are as follows: (1) The freshmen are satisfied with the English instruction in middle school in spite of their dissatisfaction with their then English achievements. (2) They find English vocabulary, rather than listening ability, a major problem at the beginning of college English learning. (3) What they mostly want to master during the four-year study in university has turned out to be o-ral English instead of reading ability. (4) They know why they should leam English but they learn very passively. After analyzing the results, the paper further proposes several suggestions for improving college English teaching.

本文以问卷调查的形式,通过描述性统计和定量分析,对非英语专业的新生英语学习现状作了调查和探讨,发现了一些有益的数据:(1)新生对中学英语教学基本满意,尽管他们对中学取得的英语成绩不太满意;(2)刚上大学英语课时最难学的是词汇,而不再是听力;(3)大学四年中最想掌握的技能是英语口语,而不再是阅读;(4)英语学习的目的比较明确,但学习方式比较被动,仍以传统为主。文章在调查分析的基础上,对大学英语教学提出了一些改进建议。

Chinese students have problems with the transition and connection of English learning at different stages.From analyzing questionnaires done by English major freshmen,and by comparing the English syllabus at different stages,the results show that a big proportion of new college students majoring in English usually cannot adapt to English learning very well.Therefore,they do not find English major courses very pleasing.Considering the problems mentioned above,the present writer feels that specialized courses relating to such broad subjects should be set up for college English majors.The courses should be more useful and aim towards:(a)seeking effective ways to develop students...

针对我国学生在英语学习各个阶段存在的过渡和衔接问题,对部分英语专业一年级学生调查问卷进行了分析,并比较了各个阶段的英语教学大纲。结果表明:在高校英语专业新生中普遍存在着对英语学习的不适应;在有关英语专业课程的安排与设置上缺乏科学性和吸引力。针对存在的问题,笔者认为:在高校英语专业中应开设与复合学科有关的专业课,加强课程的实用性和针对性;探索培养学生语言实际应用能力的有效办法,培养学生的创新精神和创造能力;加强实践教学力度;在采用高科技教学辅助手段的同时,正确认识教师和现代化教学手段的关系。参5
