In the middle member of the Guanzhuang formation of Lower Tertiary in the Pingyi basin carbonate rocks are well developed,with appreciable thickness, large coverage and variety of types. The carbonate rocks, nearly 250 to 300 meters thick, make up 35 to 40 per cent of the sedimentary rocks in the middle member of the Guanzhuang formation and show apparent sedimentation cycle. Among the carbonate rocks algal limestones predominate, more than seven types are found. However, there are fewer grainstones of much less types. Neither oolitic limestones nor dolomites can be found. The calsilutites and marls are associated with gypsum or contain pseudocrystals of gypsum. Well developed porosity is observed in various limestones. In terms of palaeon-tology, petrology, geochemistry and tectonic setting, the depositional environ-ment of carbonate rocks in this area belongs to an inland lake condition, in which alternation of arid and wet climates once prevailed. The sedimentation models can be classified into the following three types: (1) mixed model of extra-origin and intra-origin; (2) algal shoal model; (3) platform basin type model by evaporation of shallow water.
