The gland cell is long in shape and in a perpendicular row to sternum.The termite trail-following substance was extracted by n-hexane, acetone, methylene chloride from O. formosanus. The active area from the column and the thin layer of black-winged subterranean termite crude extract is similar to that found in the Reticuli-termes virginicus (Bank). The result of microchemical analysis showed that there are hydroxy group and double bond in the trail-following pheromone of 0. formosanus. 0. formosanus is attracted by three samples: extracts from the fungus Gloeophyllum tra-beum (Pers. ex Pr.) Murr-, extracts from the wood decayed by the fungus G. trabeum, and the termite trail-following compound cis, cis-3, 6-dodecadien-1-o1. The extracts from two termite species R. offinis Hsia et Fa, and Coptotermes formosanus Shiraki also show attraction to O. formosanus, but the extract of O. formosanus does not appear to be active to R. offinis and C. formosanus. Also the active fractions from the column and TLC of extract of O. formosanus do not show attraction to R. offinis and C. formosanus either.

It is used for measuring the area(zone) of inhibition zones obtained in a microbiological assay of antibiotics. Inhibition zone of five kinds antibiotics involved 13 samples were measured with this measurer and Vernier caliper. The potencies of those antibiotics agree with both measuring methods. But advantages of this measurer over other means of measuring were the heigh precision, good replication-variance coefficient 0.27%, high speed about one plate per minute and the great reduction of subjective error. It has a capability against interference. When its"Grey level" is adjusted the influence of contaminative colonies and abaormal spots in the zone or double edged zone can be ruled out of measuring result. The Z 82-A measurer has already been proved to be satisfactory for the measurement of zones obtained in a number of antibiotics, it may replace any other current measuring methods over which the measurer has a great advantage.
