The formulation of the new scheme is based on the reduction of a multiple-switch sliding mode problem to an equivalent single-switch problem, This formulation presents a general approach to fuzzy sliding mode control. Other schemes in the literature can be derived from this formulation. The inference rules are constructed based on two input variables. The first is the directional distance of the system's state to the desired sliding hypersurface in the state space. The options for selecting the second input include the derivative of the directional distance, a single state variable of special interest to the designer, or the weighted summation of any of the state variables' combinations. The new scheme is easy to realize for high order systems and it permits explicit and direct control of system dynamics. It eliminates chattering in both sliding mode and classical fuzzy sliding mode control. Furthermore, the new scheme reduces the control effort compared to the other aforementioned schemes. The stability and the performance analyses in this paper demonstrate the validity of the proposed controller.
