The results show that 0.2 μg Kainic acid dissolved in 0.5 μl physiological salt solution and injected into tie anteventral or posterior hippocampus of rats are just what have a higher survival rates and more serious impairment of the learning and memory of the dark avoidance behavior. The histological examinations demonstrate that the serious impairment of these rats' learning and memory mainly result from the injury with Kainic acid to the pyramidal cells of the CA3, CA4 areas of the anteventral, ventral and posterior parts of bilateral hippocampus and some granule cells which surround the needle of the syringe in the posterior part of the dentate gyrus. These neuronal populations correlate to the rats' learning and memory of the dark avoidance behavior closely.
