There isno longitudinal joint in RCC gravity dams, so it is necessary to take precautions against the appearance of largetransverse cracks on the upstream face of high RCC gravity dams- Furthermore, it is pointed out in this paperthat the extracooling of the orifices in the conventional concrete gravity dams without longitudinal joint andRCC gravity dams may introduce severe tensile thermal stress and may promote the appearance of large cracksin the dam.

The dam for Longtan Hydropower Station is a RCC gravity dam with the height of 216 5 m and the volume of 3 40 million m 3 . Because of high temperature in South China, it is necessary to solve many difficult scientific problems in order to construct the highest RCC gravity dam in the world. In accordance with the general layout and dam structure of the Longtan Hydropower Station, the optimization method has been studied in order to reach RCC quick construction. The analysis and study have been made on the following items and the satisfied results have been gained. These items are: the material properties of RCC dam, the seepage flow and the seepage control structures, the stress and stability of dam body, the continuous construction on the large RCC working face, the measures of temperature control and anti cracking of high RCC gravity dam, etc.. The results of this study subject reach the international advanced level and will produce good economic benefits in the construction of high RCC gravity dam for Longtan Hydropower Station.

龙滩水电站坝高216.5m,坝型定为碾压混凝土(RCC)重力坝,方量达340万m3。在我国南方高气温地区建造世界上最高的RCC重力坝,需攻克许多科技难题。本专题针对龙滩水电站枢纽布置、坝体结构进行优化研究,以有利于RCC快速施工;对RCC筑坝材料特性、渗流和防渗排水结构、坝体的应力与稳定、RCC大仓面连续施工、高RCC重力坝温控及防裂措施等进行分析研究,取得了科技攻关成果,经鉴定验收,专题成果达到国际先进水平,并将在我国建造龙滩高RCC坝中得到较大的经济效益。
