The sol- gel process of Pb-Ti system modified with acetylacetone has been studied by determination of 1H NMR and IR spectra. It is demonstrated that the modification with acetylacetone results in PTAA,i.e.,PbTi(AcAc)2(ORe)4. The sol is stable because a dimer structure is formed by the hydrolysis of the PTAA and the subsequent gelation process is prevented. The tetragonal PbTiO3 phase has crystallized for the thin films dip-coated from the precursor sol and heated at 600℃.

A stable precursor sol is prepared by controlledhydrolysis of zirconium(IV) propoxide using a solution of aqueous yttrium nitrate and glacial acetic acid as hydrolyzer. The concentrations of oxides, water and acid have been identified as main factors affecting the stability and gelation time of the zirconia sol. Adding polymer to the sol can prolong the gelation time and adjust the viscosity. Yttriastabilized cubic zirconia membranes were prepared by dipping αAl2O3 supports into the sol followed by drying and firing. To avoid the occurrence of cracks and pinholes during the processing, attention should be paid to: (i) dipping solution with suitable sol concentration and viscosity, (ii) supports with smooth surface and narrow pore size distribution and a pretreatment by dipping the supports into a polymer solution and (iii) drying in the atmosphere of 33%~76% relative humidity and (iv) low heating rate during firing especially in the early stage.
