The aim of this study was to id- entify a low molecular weight chr- omium-binding substance(LMWCr) in the organs of mammals and to clarify the substance's significant role in the detoxication and excre- tion of absorbed chromium. These findings indicate that there exists a low molecular weight chr- omium-binding substance in the ti- ssues of mammals which binds abs- orbed chromium in a specific chem- incal form,and that this substance plays an important role in the detoxi- cation and excretion of chromium.

The 51Cr3+ was intragastrically administered into rats and its absorption,distribution and excretion in various organs were studied at time intervals of 1, 2, 4,8, 16, 24, 48 and 72 hours by the radioactive tracer technique. About 99.6% of the administered chromium was excreted in feces showing that the absorption of 51Cr was less than 1%. The absorbed chromium was accumulated in many organs, in an order of liver>muscle>pancreas>bone>kidney. The fact that the specific activity in pancreas was the highest of all the studied organs indicated that pancreas might be a sensitive organ to 51Cr3+ in the body. The data of 51Cr3+ in blood was proved to fit the three compartments model, suggesting that there were two chromium clearance models in the body-one was quick and the other was slow or stable.
