1.Since last two decades,dwarf germplasms have been exploited and suc-cessfully incorporated into rice varieties in our country and South and South east-ern Asia.The yielding potential of rice varieties has been significantly improv-ed at a high level owing to its resistance to lodging and integration of a seriesof promising characteristics.The dwarf gene nowadays incorporated in hsien(in-dica type)varieties of rice might be pleiotrophic in effect.2.A recessive dwarf gene in Dee-Geo-Woo-Gen,a local hsien variety inTaiwart province,was first envisaged and confirmed later by IRRI workers.Inour country,ever since the dawn of breeding short-statured varieties in the latefifties four different sources of dwarfism have been witnessed,viz.,Ai-Geo-Nan-Te,Ai-Tze-Chuan,Hwa-Lung-Sui-Tan-Ku and Dee-Geo-Woo-Gen,among whichthe dwarf gene in Ai-Tze-Chuan and its derivatives appeared to be mostlysuited to breed better plant type hsien varieties with a rather wide adaptabilityin the main rice-growing areas along the Yangtze Valley and South China.3.In concordance with our studies during the years of 1974-1979,the fourabove-mentioned sources of dwarfism carry respectively recessive dwarf geneswhich are allelic to one another.Hybridization among them resulted in a uniqueunimodal segregating population.Specific modifying genes with minor effectsmight be involved therein.4.No nonallelic dwarf gene in hsien varieties has been brought to light yetalthough some confessed that it could exist.An imminent task of searching for(?)ew sources of dwarfism conducive to furthermore improve the breeding statusis suggested.

The obvious changes were showed in the submicroscopic structures of their leaf cells : occured changes in orientation of the chloroplast lamells arrangement, .appeared unclear and slight vacuoles inside the chloroplast, and its outside cover-membrance, however, is intact. The unclear chromatin was coagulated into a larger mass, and the nuclear membrance still remained their integrality. These changes are reversed.The low cold-toleranceness varieties(such as "Gui-Chao-2")due to the temperature too low,or the low temperature last too long,the microscopic structures of leaf cells, especially the memprance structures weres subjected by serious destruction,the chloraplasts were decomposed, large amount of vacuoles were appeared even more to form several huge vacancies.These changes are unreversed,and often resulted in the leaf wilted then the plant death. Besides, there were acumulated dense mass in the intercellular layers between various cells of the mormal leaves. The active matter exchanges took place in the two neighbour cells through the plasmodesmi,but after treatment of the low temperature,this phenomenon disappeared immedially.

籼稻大粒型品种虽然千粒重常较一般品种高,但因结实性差,难以在生产上广泛应用。本文试图探明某些大粒型品种结实性差的生理原因。据观察试验中三个大粒型品种结实性差主要在于空谷率高。据分析这三个大粒品种小穗不育的原因,是雄性器官发育过程中活力较弱,氮、碳营养匮乏,尤其是淀粉累积缓慢,不适应花粉粒充实的需求,因而花药中花粉数量少,花粉粒不充实,花粉发芽力低;另外,开花时花药散粉不充分,柱头受粉量低也是一个原因。
