The effect cf rare earth elements (RE) in the cast alloys of Al-cu system has been investigated. It was found that in order to obtain optimum mechanical properties it is necessary to keep the copper and mishmetal contents in proper proportion, so that the amount of copper dissolved in solid solution may reach the maximum value withcut the existence of any residual Q(CuAl_2) phase. By means of measuring the microhardness and electrical resistance at hihg temperatures and observcng the microstructures by TEM, it was found that the advantagcus effect of RE on the heat-resistance of alloys depends mainly upon the formation of thn skeleton intermetallic compounds along grain boundaries. The influence of complemental strengthening effect of elements Mn and Zr in Al-Cu alloys were also discussed.

Mechanisms of accumulation of Cu and activity of cytochrome oxidase in the prawn he-patopancreas varying with exposure period to Cu were studied in laboratory. The results showed:(1) When exposed to copper dissolved in sea water, the prawns actively accumulated the metal in the stomach, intestine, gills and hepatopancreas, and the amounts accumulated in the hepatopancreas were the largest.(2) Sephadex G-75 chromatography showed that after 3 days exposure, more than 66%. of Cu in supernatant of high speed centrifugation (16000×g) were present in very low molecular weight fractions, and about 20% of Cu present in metallothionein pools, indicating that the very low molecular Weight ligands are primary factors in the tissue accumulation of Cu, so is the metallothionein-like protein. In addition, cation exchange chromatography with CM-32 showed at least a Cu-complex in the very low molecular weight pool was related to the accumulation of Cu in the tissue.(3) Specific activity of cytochrome oxidise in hepatopancreas varied with increasing of exposure period. The activity at fourth day of the exposure was highest, then decreased. After 7 day exposure, the prawn molt was seriously affected and moality occurred. Copper dissolving in the solution can be considered to be performed in three steps: 1)Copper is oxdized to form CuI, 2) CuI and NH_3 are reacted to form [Cu(NH_3)_2]~+, and 3) [Cu(NH_3)_2]~+ is. oxidized to form [Cu(NH_3)_4]~(2+). In addition, the mechanism of the method, the effects of NH_3 and NH_4Cl on Cu dissolving, the heat effect of dissolving reaction on pH change during Cu dissolving are discussed. Expe- riments show that the solution has no effect eu iron and steel substrute. The stripped substrate can be replated with good adhesion. The regeneration of the solution and Cu recovery can be done with (NH_4)_2S or by electrolysis. The shortceming of the method is a little ammonia gas escaping out, which can be minimized by covering or venting.
