The paper introduced the characteristics of infrared thermal image, the characteristics and functions of infrared thermal image instrument, the application effects of infrared thermal image instrument in fault diagnosis of power equipment, such as transformer, reactor, condenser, circuit breaker, insulator string, TA, TV, power cable and wire, disconnector, high voltage power transmission conductor and generator. It is pointed out the crucial link to use the infrared thermal image instrument. The popularization of online infrared monitoring technology and infrared thermal image instrument for power equipments has the important meaning for ensuring the safe operation of power equipment and power network.
