The operating system is designed with two kernels existing together-the Linux kernel and the NC kernel. The NC kernel accomplishes real-time control functions of the EDM system and can preempt the Linux kernel. The peripheral software of the EDM system, which is implemented in several user processes, will run only when the NC kernel releases the processor. This mechanism satisfies real-time response requirement of the EDM system. At the same time, other peripheral NC software can get all support provided by Linux system.
