A survey the author recently conducted has provided evidence for the general acknowledgement that a foreign language student's good listening and speaking ability does not guarantee his success in cross cultural communication, frequent contacts with native speakers can greatly improve his cross cultural communicative ability, and formal foreign language majors enjoy better chances of success in communicating with foreigners. As listening and speaking ability is only a part of a person's communicative ability, a student with good language skills in these two aspects may still constantly find himself in difficult situations in cross cultural communication. However, frequent contacts with native speakers may enrich the student with face to face experience of dealing with foreigners, gradually improving his communicative skills. This is a major reason why students of formal foreign language major possess better cross cultural communicative ability than other types of students.

不少外语教师有这样的感觉 ,学生的外语听说能力并不等于跨文化交际能力 ,正规英语专业学生的跨文化交际能力一般优于其他类型的学生。虽然如此 ,我们却没有具有一定说服力的证据。笔者最近所做的一次调查为上述看法提供了佐证。从理论上讲 ,外语听说能力仅仅是全面交际能力的一部分 ,自然无法取代整个交际能力 ;而同目的语人士接触能最直接地获得跨文化交际的亲身体验 ,因此对提高跨文化交际能力起着至关重要的作用 ;正规外语专业的学生跨文化交际能力明显较强同他们与目的语文化及外籍教师接触较多有着直接的联系。因此 ,尽量多地与目的语文化和目的语人士接触是提高学生跨文化交际能力的最佳途径。

This paper is a case study report.It is based on a longitudinal study of an English language major class(1999)studying for a BA course at the Tanggu Branch,Tianjin Radio and Television University.The study surveyed and analyzed learners'motives of study,their exposure to English input and their internalization of the input,and measures taken to ensure the quality of the course.It concludes that open and distance education is a viable and effective method to train qualified graduates in English language....

Since China has been developing association with the outside world teaching and research of interpretation should be strengthened in the foreign languages major in colleges and universities. The main aim of interpretation teaching is to cultivate students′ interpretation skill consciousness.
