The investigation of the properties of loess constitutes a highly specialized branch of soil engineering. Among all uncertainties the following are considered the most important items:(1) the changes of bearing capacities caused by variations in the strength of the cohesive bond due to changes in its moisture content, and(2) the methods of ascertaining the amount of its settlement...

The investigation of the properties of loess constitutes a highly specialized branch of soil engineering. The design and construction of foundations and earthwork in this soil involve many uncertainties that have not been solved. Among all uncertainties the following are considered the most important items:(1) the changes of bearing capacities caused by variations in the strength of the cohesive bond due to changes in its moisture content, and(2) the methods of ascertaining the amount of its settlement under the combined action of foundation loads and of percolating water.In order to prevent foundations against settlement the "Provisional Code for the Design of Natural Foundations" gives a set of rules of precautions for designers to observe, which include the prevention of water from getting into the foundations, artificial strengthening of the soil and the designing of superstructures in such a way that they will adjust themselves to settlement. Before the adoption of any of such precautions could be decided, the accuracy in evaluating the amount of possible settlement of the soil is a problem of prime importance, which unfortunately cannot be satisfactorily obtained.This paper attempts to give some predominent characteristics of loess, the points of contradiction between the assumptions made in the old designing code and the results derived from actual work, a comparison of the salient features of the old code with the new code of ordinance of the U. S. S. R., 1955, and some suggestions regarding further developments of this branch of soil engineering. Several cases of actual construction work in loess in recent years are also cited which, owing to our incomplete knowledge of the soils, nature, have inevitably either caused unnecessary expenses to the works, or brought about results detrimental to the stability of structures.In this branch of soil engineering have, therefore, many difficulties yet to be contended with. It is hoped that this paper could be of some reference value to research engineers in this line and the knowledge of loess be further developed in view of the increasing pressure of necessity in our present construction work.

黄土工程特性的研究,是目前土壤力学一个重要部門。有关黄土区的地基与土工工作、我們經常根据“天然地基設計暫行規范”上条文来設計,但对於基土沉陷量的估計,往往不易准确,而造成工程上的困难与事故。这是現时没有得到解决的問題。本文闡述黄土的若干特性,旧規范条文上的缺点,苏联1955年批准的“建筑法規”内改善黄土部分条文的意义,以及目前国内研究与發展的方向。其中主要說明黄土由於荷載及含水量兩項的綜合影响对其沉陷性能上所發生的变化,以及估計这項变化较合理的方法,以期在研究工作上作进一步的認識。

This paper discusses some problems which are found to be important in designing the arch dam of the Liv-Hsi-Ho-hydroelectrical power station. The arch dam under discussion has a max. height of 82 m and spans 255. m, situated in a V-shaped valley. It is an overflow arch dam of the various radius and thickness type. The technical design has been nearly finished and the dam is now under construction. The first problem discussed is the investigation of the stability of arch dam under various ioads when the dam is rested on a rock foundation with unexpected jointe and cracks. Methods and formulas for the determination of stability factors are recommended. Then the paper reviews the various methods of stress andlysis of arch dams now in use and finds that the cantilever-arch method (or so called the trial load method) is a suitable one. An amphified procedure is suggested, with this procedure and by means of certain tables of founda- tion and arch deformation constanis, the analysis of stressos and deflections of a circular arch including the effect of foundation deformation can be simplified greately without sacrifyinq dccuracy. The necessdry tables needed in analysis will be presented in an dnother paper. The problems of temperature control and temperature stresses determination are also impor- lant ones in arch dam design and construction. This paper discusses the vdrious principles of temperature control and method of computation, and describes the one accepted in this dam. The priciples of analysis of temperature stresses of arch dams are discussed in detail. Finally the problem of discharginq floods over the arch dam is described in brief. The design work in this respect has not been finished, further investigations and model tests are roquired.

本文旨在论述流溪河拱壩工程在设计中一些主要问题。拱壩最大壩高82公尺,壩顶弧长255.5公尺,位于一V形山谷中。壩体大不同半径和厚度拱壩并采用壩顶溢流形式。工程设计及施工已接近完成。本文首先探讨了拱壩壩头岩基具有节理和裂隙时在不同荷载下的稳定问题。推荐了决定系数的方法和公式。其后就现有的拱壩各种放力分析方法进行了论述并认力悬臂拱法(或称试载法)较为适用。本文对于试载法提出了改进步骤,利用这些改进步骤并借用一定数量的基础和拱圈变形常数表则计算应力分析和包括基础变形的圆拱变位可大大简化并无损其精度。在分析中所需数表将另著文介绍。控制拱壩温度和确定温度应力问题在拱壩设计和施工中也极关重要。本文论述了温度控制的各种原理和计算方法,并描述了本工程所采用的措施。对于拱壩温度应力的分析原理曾加论述。最后曾就拱壩壩顶溢流问题加以简述。有关此项新颖问题的设计,需待进一步研究并进行模型试验。

In this article, we have discussed in detail the fundamental principles of similarity of soilmasses, and its application in the solution of problems in the field. Next we have explainedthe methods of the design and construction of the centrifugal machine aud some points whichmust be noticed during the course of its construction and design. In conclusion, We have givena brief account of the possible solution of problems, solved by this method.

文中详述了松散介质模型试验规律及这些规律的应用,并说明了试验所用的离心机的构造及其设计方法与注意要点。最后简述了试验中测量技术及模型试验可能解决的土工问题等。
