In this paper, the relationships of positivity and optimality for linear time - invariant systems are considered. First, the relationship of positivity and optimality for single-input single - output linear time - invariant systems is discussed by the frequency domain method. In this paper, the relationships of positivity and optimality for linear time - invariant systems are considered. First, the relationship of positivity and optimality for single-input single - output linear time - invariant systems is discussed by the frequency domain method. Next, for multivariable linear time-invariant systems, this relationship is discussed by the time domain method. The main results are as follows: The closed loop system formed by stable optimal state feedback is positive, its transfer function matrix is positive real. Conversely, if the open loop transfer function matrix is positive real, then the closed loop system obtained by negative unity output feedback is stable and optimal. Finally, from the discussion of the relationships of positivity and optimality we showed that the stable gain margin of optimal control systems is infinite.

The method given here illustrates how to choose the diagonal elements qn(s)' s of open-loop transfer function matrix Q(s) for obtaining such a precompensator K(s) that satisfies the requirements of stability, dynamic behaviour of outputs, robustness and decoupling. The method is suitable for computer-aided design, since all the design work, except choosing qii(s)'s by man -machine interaction, are carried out by computers.

An one-dimensional direct area search method for effective search of root-loci and complementary root-loci points is presented in this paper.The input data of the open loop transfer function can be given as poles and zeros or coefficients of poly-nomials and all with dead time-delay.Theoretically the order of the transfer function is unlimited.A considerable number of examples up to 10th-order have been successfully worked out on a pocket computer PC-1500.
