In this paper, a method for practical stability domain estimate of power system utilizing topological energy function (TEF) based on a structure preserving model (SPM) is presented. The main view set forth in this paper is that the generator representation using E'_q model (constant quadrature axis voltage behind transient reactance) instead of classical E' model (constant internal voltage behind transient reactance) can be modeled more realistically for first swing stability analysis.Besides the generator model is treatd to accommodate one-axis E_q model, the arbitrarily voltage dependent loads are considered. It has been obtained in acerate identifying the system transient energy, especially the component due to voltage dependent active loads. The boundary of practical stability domain is determined using potential energy boundary surface (PEBS) method. The effectiveness of this method has been investigated with 16-generaton 51-bus reduced East China power system. The simulation study has been made to support the issue proposed.
