The development of students'competence to read in English requires in the first place the clarification of the nature of reading,on the one band. and of the potential ways to attain the desired goal, on the other hand. Based on a review of the literature on reading, this paper indicates that reading is a meaning-focused activity. It is a purposeful meanting constructing process which requires the reader,s active interaction with the writer/text and his use of top-down as well as bottom-up processing....

As a new method in teaching foreign languages, the proficiency-orientedinstruction has been widely used in Europe and North America since its emergence in1980s. It is characterized by its emphasis on students' competence in speaking-writingof foreign languages in an allround manner. This essay is an introduction to theforming, development of this method, its characteristics and its application in the teaching of Chinese in the United States.

注重语文能力教学法(Prdidenc-trientedInstruction)是80年代在欧美国家出现的新型外语教学方法,已为这些国家欧美语系外语教学广泛采用.其特点是以增强学生外语之语言及文字能力为主,使学生全面掌握所修习的外语。本文介绍此法的形成、发展、特点及其在美国汉语教学中的应用。
