In postembryonic teleosts, the marginal germinal zone and the embryonic fissure represent active sites of neurogenesis and contribute to the formation of new glial cells and photoreceptors (cones and rods). Postembryonic growth and differentiation of retinal pigment epithelium and photoreceptors in the retina of the red belly tilapia, Tilapia zillii (Cichlidae, Teleostei) was studied here for the first time. Light and transmission electron microscopical analyses of the retinas of four size groups were carried out. As observed in most other teleosts studied so far, the retina of the adult red belly tilapia shows a balloon like expansion in all specimens studied here. Furthermore, it possesses a curved, open embryonic fissure denoting an asymmetrical postembryonic growth of the eye. The retinal pigment epithelium shows a peripheral to central gradient of postembryonic differentiation. Laterally, i.e. at the peripheries of the marginal germinal zone, this epithelium contains spherical melanosomes only. It develops elongated melanosome and apical processes medially. Likewise, the developing photoreceptors show the following developmental events in a latero medial sequence. An inner segment with calycal processes is formed. The inner segment is then differentiated into an ellipsoid and a myoid. These two gradients roughly correspond with the embryonic developmental sequences observed in the retinas of other previously studied teleost species, thus providing another clue that postembryonic retinal growth in teleosts spatially simulates embryonic retinal development. The present work indicates that double cones may arise as a result of the splitting of developing single cones.
