Global microcode compaction at present is an important issue in firmware engineering. Global microcode compaction at present is an important issue in firmware engineering. This paper introduces a global microcode compaction algorithm, which improves space efficiency and loop compaction based on Fisher's trace scheduling algorithm. The imporved algorithm consists of a modified menu of rules for moving mic-rooperations, a heuristic trace scheduling algorithm, and a special loop compaction algorithm.This improved algorithm has been implemented and tested on some microcodes of real machines, the preliminary results indicate that this global compaction algorithm needs shorter execution time and less storage space in comparison with Fisher's algorithm and is more close to that of hand-compaction.

微代码全局压缩是当前固件工程的一个重要课题。本文介绍一个基于Fisher路径调度法的微代码全局压缩算法,对空间效益及循环压缩作了改进。这个改进型算法包括:(1)修改微操作移动规则;(2)采用启发式路径调度算法;(3)采用特殊的循环压缩算法。 我们已实现这个改进算法,并用实际机器的微代码进行验证。初步结果表明新算法无论在时间效益及空间效益上都比Fisher算法有明显提高,更接近于手工压缩。

Structured modular microprogramming is an important base for firmware engineering. This paper describes its basic principles. The modular microprogramming is introduced with an example of the emulation microprogram that has been run on the VAX-11/780 computer.
