In this paper, a general accurate formulation of Petrov-Galerkin finite element scheme for one dimensional covection diffusion equation and the necessary conditions of its test function are derived. Both steady and unsteady system are considered and some elementary expressions of the test function are given. The value of the test functions choice me hod is analysed and showed by a very difficult numerical example, the nearshore currents induced by breaking waves in a coastal zone.
