It is shown that the macro-growth rate of fatigue crack is not equal to the striation spacing (i. c., micro-growth rate of fatigue crack) in all the △K values except △K=62. 9 kg/mm~(3/2). The fatigue fracture surfaces of a spheroidal graphite cast iron have been studied. It is shown that the macro-growth rate of fatigue crack is not equal to the striation spacing (i. c., micro-growth rate of fatigue crack) in all the △K values except △K=62. 9 kg/mm~(3/2). The electron-microscopic examination of fracture surfaces have proved that graphite spheres are cleft, or seperated from the parent metal during the crack propaga-tion. In the front of the main crack tip, the existence of graphite spheres (like micro-voids) increases the three-demensional stresses which may cleave or tear the parent metal in local positions. This is the important cause which explains why the macro-growth rate is greater than the micro-growth rate (the striation spacing) even in the relatively low growth-rate range of fatigue crack. The expression in relation of the macro-growth rate, dl/dN, with the micro-growth rate (the striation spaciug), S, is given as follows:dl/dN=3. 18×10~(-5)(△K)~(2. 50)S.

The results btained are as follows: (1) Fracture surfaces corresponding to the lower growth-rate exhibit three dis-tinctive zones of different appearance, showing that the propagation of cracks inthis region consists f hree stages, i.e. crack initiation, crack propagation, and atransition stage which dominated by both ransgranular striation growth and in-tergranular fracturing mechanisms. (2) In the intermediate growth-rate egion the propagation of fatigue cracksprincipally takes place by a striation mechanism, though the triation space (S) doesnot coincide with the macrocrack propagation rate (da/dN). (3) In the high rowth-rate region the rate propagation of fatigue cracks isgoverned by the striation growth mechanism as ell as by the dimple mechanism.The interaction between these two mechanisms and the pattern of the growth fdimples have been investigated quantitatively.
