The Yangtze river boats are one of the special type of boats in our country.For many years our shipbuilders have gained much experience and success in the design and construction.Their general arrangements and hull structures,have been carefully studied,with special attention to the narrow waters,rushing current,curved course and beaches etc.of the river.So,an excellent type of Yangtze river boats of light weight,strong structure,small draft,large cargo capacity,good maneuverability and high speed is needed.Besides,the depth of the river changes with seasons,the ship may be used all the year round. This paper is a summation of the building experience of five Yangtze river boats which were built during the period forward of 1958. The principal dimensions and characteristics of the five boats are: Length over all 71.20m.;Displacement 1376T; Breadth,max.15.00m.;Passengers and crew 544; Depth moulded 5.80m.;Speed 14 knots. The author analysed some of the key points of technical problems,which oceured in the building process and some conclusions are as follows: 1.The reasonable choice of the sectional positions is very important to the thin plating structure like the Yangtze river boats,the double bottom section of longitudinal system in general should be sectioned. 2.The measurement of pre-distortion is a ratter simple,economical and effective means for mini- mizing the welding distortion.This may be recommended to all sections,the value of predistortion may be chosen by experience or by calculation. 3.Joining the structure parts of the super-structures by the use of CO_2 gas protected welding may result less distortion and more production.The quality of the wavelike structure is closely dependent on the shape of the mold. 4.The shaft strut is positioned and assembled to the hull on the shipway after itself being complctep as a whole on the support mold floor.This was proved to be an advaneed technique by the building practices of the several Yangtze river boats.Since the assembly-time being cut to 1/3,and therefore the shipway time is shortened by this sequence. In addition,a few suggestions to improve the structures in further design are also made.These may be used as references for designing and construction of the same type of boats.
