Aromatics in >359℃ heavy cycle oils and clarified oils are mainly polyaromatics with less and short side chains which are difficult to crack. The coke yield can be reduced by drawing off all or part of them trom the cracking unit. Appreciable amount of the resins in residues can be converted into smaller molecules during resid cat-cracking.

Experimental data show that paraffins and cycloparaffins crack into olefins and lighter paraffins,the metal compounds mostly convert to coke,and the aromatic content increases after cracking.The aromatics in cracked heavy oil, characterized by lower molecular weight,more condensed rings with less and shorter chains in structure,are completely different from those in feedstock, and mostly will not crack further,but convert into coke. The resins in most Chinese residues,distinctively characterized by their less- aromatic structure,possibly crack into lighter hydrocarbons and polar com- pounds as well as convert into coke during cracking.
