In this paper the nonlinear self-consistent theory of the electron cyclotron maser instability is studied. The configuration used to study the maser instability consists of relativistic electrons gyrating about and drifting along a uniform magnetic field within a cylindrical waveguide. Since relativistic effect excites the transverse electric mode in the waveguide, the coupled nonlinear equations have been derived from the beam frame. The theory describes the temporal nonlinear evolution of the field amplitude and frequency shift of a single wave mode. the nonlinear wave dynamics are self-consistently determined from the nonlinear particle orbits through the force and wave equations. There are two mechanisms for the saturation of the wave power, i. c. depletion of the free energy and phase trapping. Competition between the two saturation mechanisms leads to a peak in the energy conversion efficiency as a function of beam energy.Numerical results show that energy conversion efficiency from the electrons to the wave can be over 60 percent in the beam frame.

Making use of the nethod presented in the references[1—4], a theoretical study of large orbit electron cyclotron resonance maser is given in this paper. The Iinear theory of gyromonotron and the dispersion equation are formulated. The equations for starting power, starting current and frequency shift of gyrononotron have been obtained, the numerical calculations are given in this paper as well.
