The flow with heavy sediment concentration in the northwestern part of China consists of material finer than 0.01 mm. and varying amounts of coarser particles. The fine particles together with the clear water form the framework by creating a flocculating structure and behave like a one-phase liquid, with coarser particles settling freely within the muddy water. The whole flow field keeps the characteristics of a two-phase sediment-carrying system, only the liquid phase consists not of the clear water but that of muddy water formed by the clear water and the fine particles. Following the increase in sediment concentration, more and more coarser particles join the flocculating structure and become an integrating part of the muddy water. After the concentration surpasses a certain critical value, the whole flow transforms into an one-phase muddy flow. This critical sediment eoncentration differs with different sediment compositions. Experimental results indicate that the critical concentration assumes a value of 420. 630 and 1,200 kg/m3 respectively for sediment with median diameter of 0.042. 0.056 and 0.070 mm. After reaching this stage, the maintenance of the flow becomes a matter of whether the flow is able to overcome the frictional resistance. The flow with heavy sediment concentration no longer behaves as a Newtonian fluid, but can be treated as a Bingham fluid or a pseudo-plastic fluid instead. Its viscosity is much higher than that of the clear water, and increases at a high rate with the concentration. There are two different types of flow,namely the turbulent one and the laminar one, for the flow with heavy sediment concentration. The transition from turbulentic laminar-flow depends not only on the Reynolds number, but on the Helstrom number also. The more the fine particles and the higher the sediment concentration, the larger is the critical Reynolds number. As a whole, the transition takes place at comparatively large flow depths and velocities. The turbulent two-phase high sediment concentration flow assumes a logarithmic velocity distribution, with sediment moving essentially in suspension and a friction coefficient close to or slightly smaller than that of the clear water flow. The suspended sediment distribution along the vertical obeys the diffusion theory. For sediment with uniform size, the energy consumed per unit time to keep the sediment in suspension increases with the concentration and reaches a maximum at about 400 kg/m3 for the sediment size generally encountered in the field. Beyond this concentration, less energy expenditure is required to maintain the flow. When the flow transforms from the turbulent region into the laminar zone, the friction loss increases rapidly. The laminar heavy sediment concentration flow is highly unstable, and a series of roll wave will be generated. There exists an upper limit for the sediment concentration which can be carried by the flow, above which the whole flow is solidified and plugs up the river channel. The composition of the loess material in the Yellow River basin decreases progressively from the northwestern towards the southeastern direction. In the zone where the loess material is coarser, the limiting value of the sediment concentration is about 1,500 to 1,600 kg/m3 which amounts to 56.5 to 60.5% by volume of the solid material. In the district where the loess material is finer, the concentration never reaches a value over 1,000 kg/m3. The erosive power of the heavy sediment concentration flow is much higher than that of the clear water flow. The peak flows with extremely high sediment content can tear up the bed material by pieces or by blocks, and lower the river bed as much as 10 meters, after the passing of a single flood.

高含沙水流一般属于二相水流,液相为清水与细颗粒泥沙组成的浑水,固相则为粗颗粒泥沙。粗、细泥沙的分界粒径因含沙量的增大而加大,当含沙量超过某一临界值时,整个水流转化成为均一的一相浑水。物质组成越细,这个临界含沙量越小。 高含沙水流可按宾汉体处理,其粘滞性远较清水为大。在流速和水深还相当大时,就有可能从紊流过渡为层流流动。 紊流型二相高含沙水流具有对数流速分布,阻力损失系数接近或略小于清水水流,泥沙运动以悬移为主,含沙量垂线分布遵循扩散定律。进入层流区后,阻力损失迅速递增,且具有高度的不稳定性,会出现滚波性质的阵流现象。 高含沙水流的冲刷能力较清水水流为大,高含沙洪峰通过时,会引起河床的大幅度下降。当作用在床面上的剪切力小于宾汉极限剪力时,泥沙堵塞河床,水流不复流动。高含沙水流的这种剧烈冲淤现象,将在防洪上带来一系列的问题。
