The present paper introduces the analysis method of slope stability based ongeneralized piecewise linear failure mechanisms. It formulates the slope stability analysis into amathematical problem of minimization that is solvcd by simplex algorithm. The proposed methodis illustrated with two examples of circular and noncircular slope stability and the results are compared with previously published solutions. Although it may not be the fastest and most efficienttechnique of minimization, the simplex method is simple, reliable, flexible and versatile.

Based on the principle of the general slice method,an optimum method determinating the minimum factor of safety of non-circular slip surface is proposed.The procedure allows location of slip surface to be iterated so that the factor of safety converges to a sufficiently small value in compatation.The method is illustrated with a numerical example.

The key of analysis on slope stability is the determination of the critical failure surface. As for nonhomogeneous slopes sliding with noncircular failure surface, the existing methods are often too complex to extend in engineering. Based on the traditional method of Sarma,this paper provides a realizable method-spreadsheet method for determining the critical surface of slopes with an example.The method is proved to be brief and clear. It is worth being applied in geotechnical engineering. 

边坡临界滑面的确定是边坡稳定性分析的关键,对于非圆弧滑动的非均质边坡而言,已有的各种分析方法往往过于繁琐,不便于工程推广。本文基于传统的Sarma法,应用MicrosoftExcel电子表及其非线性规划求解工具,以实例给出了电子表法确定边坡临界滑面的实现方法。该法简便明了,具有较大的工程应用价值。
