Professor Yuan Fuli (1893—1987) was one of the pioneers on the research of modern geomorphology and Quaternary geology in China. Professor Yuan Fuli (1893—1987) was one of the pioneers on the research of modern geomorphology and Quaternary geology in China. He had been the leading scientist in these fields for decades of years. Professor Yuan had pupils everywhere. It will be never overestimated for his contribution to the field of geology in China because so many scientists, as students of Professor Yuan Fuli, devoted themselves to the geology of China and important achievements have been obtaining by Professor Yuan himself and by his students. Professor Yuan expended all his energies for the development of geological sciences and his contribution was so far unparalleled in China. Throughout his life, Professor Yuan was a geologist always facing the challenges of the nature, a geologist earnestly practising what he devoted and a geologist being able to converse with mountains and rocks.

袁复礼教授是我国当代地貌学和第四纪地质学研究的开创者之一。半个多世纪以来袁老师的弟子满天下。受过袁老师教诲的学生之多,成绩之大恐怕在国内没有人能够比得上。也只有这样才可以看出袁老师为中国的第四纪和地质科学的发展所花费的心血和做出的贡献的份量和意义。袁复礼教授的一生的地质工作和他的教育工作都说明他是一位不服输的地质学家,是一位把地质学念在“身上”的地质学家,更是一位能够和大山岩石谈话的地质学家。

Abstract:Andre Cailleux, or Andre de Cayeux de Senarpont, was an eminent French geologist, having made especially outstanding achievements in Quaternary Geology. Hewas born on 24th of December 1907; died on 27th of December 1986 at the age of79. After his death, the French periodical Cablers Geologiques issued a special number to commemorate him. Hi life was extraordinary in that he tilled in his study to the very end of his life. Not only limited to geology, he cultivated a verywide field in natural sciences....

Abstract:Andre Cailleux, or Andre de Cayeux de Senarpont, was an eminent French geologist, having made especially outstanding achievements in Quaternary Geology. Hewas born on 24th of December 1907; died on 27th of December 1986 at the age of79. After his death, the French periodical Cablers Geologiques issued a special number to commemorate him. Hi life was extraordinary in that he tilled in his study to the very end of his life. Not only limited to geology, he cultivated a verywide field in natural sciences. His geologic investigations had left footprints over allthe continents of the world. His works are very abundant, reaching 535 pieces evenaccording to the incomplete counting by the authors of the special number of CahiersGeologiques. He got his doctorate at science faculty of Paris University in 1942.Henceforth he had assumed many important duties or posts in different French andinternational scientific organizations, such as, mentioning only the essential: vicepresident of French Geologic Society, vice-chairman during the Congress of Prehistoric Archaeology of France, member of the French Geographical Society, professor of Sedimentology and Geology at Paris University, member of the French National Committee for Antarctic Research president of French Society of Geochemistry,president of French National Committee for Quaternary Research, member, then president of the French National Committee for the History of Geologic Sciences, honorary president of French National Committee of INQUA (International Union ofQuaternary Research). For international posts, he had been the secretary, then thepresident of the Commission of Periglacial Morphology of international GeographicUnion (IGU), president (1961-1965) of INQUA, member of the Commission ofNeotectonics of IGU, member of the Commission of History of Earth Sciences ofInternational Geologic Union, member of the International Committee for the History of Geologic Sciences, member of the international Association of Planetology,member of the National Geographic Society (of America).Owing to his prestige and achievement in science and as he had carried outgeologic investigations in many parts of the world, he was accorded many awardsand honorary titles and was invited to give lectures or directions in research in manyscientific institutions of different countries. He was given honorary titles such asacademician, research fellow, honnorary doctor in Germany, Sweden, Poland, Belgium, Argentine, Canada, the United States. He was invited to give lectures or todirect researches in the USA, Sweden, Holland, Spain, Hungary, Brazil, Canada,Switzerland, former French West Africa, England, Australia, Iran, Portugal and Italy.His scientific achievements touched the following domains; if arranged accordingto number of works, they are: Sedimentology, Periglacial Studies, Eolian Action,Geomorphology, Planetology, General Geology, Philosophy of Sciences, Methodology,Biogeography, Neotectonics, Glaciers and Glaciology.The writer of this paper followed Cailleux during 1949-1951 in the study ofGeomorphology and Sedimentology. Cailleux emphasized that the study of Geomorphology must be accompanied with the study of its correlated sediments. He thoughtthat only through making clear the characteristics of the relevant sediments canwe reconstruct the geomorphic processes which are lost for ever. He taught how todistinguish among sands and gravels traces of actions by rivers, waves and winds.He indicated how the alternative freezing-melting and solifluction influence on thesediments and landforms in the periglacial region. He warned one should not let betrapped by the dogma of Davisian Cycle of Erosion; one should be aware that abrupt changes of climate may also lead to occurence of landform in tiers. Suchthoughts. and method of research have been propagated through the present writerto a new generation of Chinese geomorphologists.As Cailleux had touched a very broad field of researph and attained greatdepth, it is hard for the present writer to give a complete review, to say a preciseappraisa

本文介绍已故法国地质学家A.Cailleux的生平和学术成就。他在第四纪地质学方面有很深的造诣,学识非常广博,晚年沉浸于行星学的研究。他曾获得法国的、外国的许多学术荣誉称号,除在法国巴黎大学执教外,还被邀请到许多国家的大学、研究机构去讲学和指导研究工作。他主张地貌学研究必须结合与地貌形成过程相关的沉积物的研究,认为只有这样,恢复地貌过程才有根据。他1961—1965年曾任第六届INQUA主席。
