Coal gangue used as engineering material needs a higher compactness, but compactness of it appears to have some complex features because of peculiar lithologic composition and grain size distribution . This paper discusses the relationship between granulometric composition and compactness of coal waste. The results of the compacting and permeability test using coal gangue with different grain size distribution show that the main grain grade shortage impacted consolidationcompactness is a lower content of finegrain, especially silt and clay grain grade. If the content of the finegrain is increased, not only the consolidation of gangue can be enhanced effectively, namely, the coal gangue can get a higher degree of consolidation under a lower compacting energy, but also the waterstability can be improved obviously.
