For the sake of clarifying the mechanism of dolomitic slag formation in the BOF, a tetrahedral CaO-MgO-FeO_n-SiO_2diagram is formed from the four tertiary systems CaO-SiO_2-FeO_n, MgO-SiO_2-FeO_n, MgO-CaO-SiO_2 and MgO-CaO-FeO_n. Based upon the boundary surface of the MgO primary phase volume in this tetrahedral system we designed a so called "low melting point" MgO saturation space diagram, using the multiple parallel project method. In this diagram the existence of a critical line K-L is noted. Above this...

Above this critical line the liquidus temperature of slag would increase with an increase of MgO, but below this line the reverse is true. The reality of this K-L line has been confirmed by laboratory tests. The relation between the diagram and the practice of BOF process is discussed. Application of this diagram to the BOF process may help in the selection of the amount and time of dolomite addition as well as in the petrographical examination of BOF slags.
