By heat treatment study, extraction experiments and powder photography, the differential thermal effects occuring below 250°of three amorphous sulfides of antimony are inter- preted in this paper. At about 220°, all the three amorphous sulfides produce crystalline Sb_2S_3. In the neighborhood of 160°, the pentasulfide and tetrasulfide segregate into easily extractable sulfur and amorphous Sb_2S_3. The latter change has been identifid in the main with the following reaction: 1/xS_x→1/8S_8+~3 kcal. On the basis of the above identification, the pentasulfide and tetrasulfide prepared from Na_3SbS_4·9H_2O are probably complex systems of [Sb_2S_3+S_μ+S_λ] and of [Sb_2S_3+S_μ] respectively. The fact that a synthetic sample containing 91% amorphous Sb_2S_3 and 9% Sμ gives essentially the same differential thermal diagram as the pentasulfide and tetrasulfide strongly supports the proposed model. According to Currie, Bunsen's pentasulfide contains no easily extractable sulfur. However, Bunsen's pentasulfide may not be a chemical individual either, inasmuch as it produces easily extractable sulfur at about 160°. In the light of the proposed theory, Bunsen's pentasulfide is probably a complex system of [Sb_2S_3+2S_μ]. The differential thermal diagram of the pentasulfide is probably a pertinent reference to its quality.

By means of the method of Bothe and coworkers, we synthesized some compounds of the general formula IX, which were then subjected to hydrolysis and decarboxylation in order to get the corresponding acid X. Through chain-lengthening processes, X might be transformed into the desired analogs of Ⅵ.Diethyl 3-(3-methylphthalidyl)-benzyl-malonate (IXA) was obtained by the action of the pseudo acid chloride of o-acetobenzoic acid with diethyl magnesio-benzylmalonate, and diethyl 3-(3-methylphthalidyl)-(3′,5′-dimethoxy-benzyl)-malonate (IXB) by the same reaction with magnesio-compound of diethyl 3,5-dimethoxy-benzyl-malonate.Diethyl 3-(3-methyl-4-chloro-7-methoxy-phthalidyl)-(3′,5′-dimethoxy-benzyl)-malonate (IXC) could not be obtained in crystalline form.Experiments on the hydrolysis of compounds IXA and IXB were carried out in both acidic and alkaline media. Unlike the carbethoxymethyl substituted phthalidyl-malonate, both of the benzyl substituted phthalidyl-malonates could not be hydrolysed by acids. IXA was also resistant to barium hydroxide and concentrated ammonium hydroxide, but it was cleaved to give o-acetobenzoic acid on warming for a short time in 1 N sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide solution. Compound IXB was also easily decomposed by 1 N sodium hydroxide.

本文试图合成黴素的隣羟甲基苯甲酸内酯類降解物的近似同型物。已合成3-(3-甲基隣羟甲基苯甲酸内酯基)-苄基丙二酸乙酯(IXA)和3-(3-甲基隣羥甲基苯甲酸内酯基)-(3',5'-二甲氧基苄基)-丙二酸乙酯(IXB)。也曾试图合成3-(3-甲基-4-氯-7-甲氧基隣羟甲基苯甲酸内酯基)-(3',5'-二甲氧基苄基)-丙二酸乙酯(IXC),但未得到纯产物。化合物IXA和IXB不能用酸使其水解。前者也不能被氫氧化銨,氫氧化鋇等鹼水解,但對於氫氧化鈉或氫氧化鉀却十分敏感,與1N或0.2N强鹼溶液共熱卽能破裂而得到隣乙醯苯甲酸。1N氫氧化鈉溶液也能破坏化合物IXB。
