Methods Synergistic modulation effects of RA and IFN-γ on the morphological appearances of cultured C6 glioma cells were observed and changes in GFAP expression were studied by SP immunohistochemical staining. Results More differentiated morphological appearances resembling normal astrocytes were observed after RA/IFN-γ differentiation therapy; most of the untreated cells showed low GFAP expression, but RA or RA/ IFN-γ therapy significantly elevated GFAP expression (P1, P2<0.01); The elevated expression of GFAP in RA/ IFN-γ treated cells was significantly different from that in cells treated with RA or IFN-γ alone (P < 0. 01). Conclusion The synergistic differentiation therapy can induce the poorly differentiated immature glioma cells to grow into well-differentiated cells.
