The craze of going abroad reflected truthfully on the realities of China at that time.However, the trend has begun to reverse since the 1990s. An official survey reveals that 7000 overseas graduates came back to China in 1998. According to some statistics, Chinese students studying overseas total about 300,000, and many wish to start their careers in China on their graduation. The new phenomenon mirrors the new realities of China.Doctor Xu Qingguo, a Harvard graduate, operates a company in Beijing now. He had worked in a big investment bank in USA before he started his own company in China two years ago. His company offers professional training courses to Chinese personnel in foreign companies doing business in China. Doctor Xu believes that the abundant chances at home are the biggest attraction to people like him. Business operations in USA are quite mature. If you want to start your own company, you must have enough capital and technological resources for survival in a competition against big names in one particular industry. Butback home, pressures for business startups are not so cutthroat. Markets are just beginning to take shape.There are more people like Doctor Xu Qingguo in Beijing. According to some statistics, Beijing has sent out about 60,000 people to overseas universities for advanced studies and more than 20,000 have come back. And the biggest allure is to set up businesses in China, a paradise of business opportunities. The Haidian Business Park for Overseas Students is just such a heaven tugged away in one of Beijing' s suburbs. The park now is the home to 44 businesses dedicated to research and development of high-tech projects.IT industry is one of the biggest virgin lands where people back from the outside plant more and harvest more. They believe that China has the largest markets for new technologies. Ren Xiaodong, a homecoming student and CEO of an information company located in Beijing, observes that China needs its own hardware and software for reasons such as national security, politics and economy. Companies inside China have stronger competitive advantages in the high-tech areas. Ren's company, started by a group of Stanford graduates, is dedicated to computer security technology and products. With powerful background in education and technology they have acquired in USA and with their intimate knowledge of China, theyturn out products that lead the industry. They believe that their products are better than those provided Microsoft.Undergoing the greatest historical transition in 2000 years from a backward agricultural society to a modern power, China is being industrialized and transformed into a business country. The changing landscape creates chances not only for domestic firms to start profitable businesses but also for overseas students to come back and tap the huge market with their technologies and ideas. New policies and measures, formulated because of and for the new changes, are adopted to attract more talents back from overseas businesses. An exhibition was held in Beijing in May 2000. The weeklong activity provided a platform for overseas Chinese talents to present their high-tech projects to investors and partners.In the past decades many Chinese scientists and engineers have become world leaders in their own particular fields. Take IT industry for example. Many Chinese talents in foreign companies are playing major roles. Their companies have set up very close working relationships with Chinese companies.
