Through the discusion of diagenesis of depositional sedi- ments, a new view point is suggested about mechanism of formation of the pore space in a reservoir, it is considered that the petrophysical properties of reservoir is control led by both micro-sedimentary facies and diagenesis. It is pointedout that reservoir geology plays a more important role in petroleum exploration and development.

In this paper,the stratigraphic architecture,classification and ordering are discussed on the basis of the analysis of sedimentation of the strata which are formed by vertical and lateral accumulation.The main contents of modern lithostratigraphy include:(1) the establishment of lithostratigraphic units ;(2)the genesis of strata ;(3)the geological ages of strata, and (4)the stratigraphic framework (lithostratigraphic,chronostratigraphic and biostratigraphic frameworks etc. )The establishment of lithostratigraphic units is the basis for lithostratigraphic research,and should be accomplished in terms of five basic characteristics: (1 )lithological,(2)biological, (3 )structural characteristics,(4)the thickness and shape,and (5 )the contact relations (between the top and bottom,and the interior of units).
